If you are not careful you can DROP as quick as an elephant attempting to skydive… without even realizing it… until you hit the ground.

Like a slap in the face you feel it… you know when it has happened, when you have done it again… made a decision that costs you dearly… taken action in an attempt to get a quick result and ending up thousands of dollars in debt with nothing to show for it…

or any other number of consequences in your life.

BUT You don't have to feel this stabbing pain if you stop and use the following steps throughout your daily life to make decisions and to ensure you are on the right path.

There is no reason to hit the ground like the elephant if you only need to spend a few minutes focusing on these steps. Take action towards a happier life by implementing these steps into your decision making, after a little while they will become second nature and you will find yourself making better decisions… feeling more at ease with yourself and more confident in your ability to live a successful and fulfilling life.

4 Steps to Effective Decision Making…

1. Will this decision bring you closer to your goals?

Look at all the possible outcomes from the decision you need to make. What are the positives, the negatives possible outcomes… and also look at if the decision may even leave you in the same place you started. You should be looking to make positive decisions that will improve your life, whether small or large decisions the same process is involved, the difference being that larger decisions require more time and research.

E.g. An everyday decision may be the food you buy at the supermarket. You can either buy healthy food that will energize your body and keep you healthy or fill up on artificial foods that can cause cancer, diabetes and more. This is fairly straight forward as although you can always improve your diet, you know that fruit is better for you than sweets and so on.

On the other hand a more complex decision may be in relation to buying a car. There is a large financial expense involved and you must also look at what your needs are from a vehicle. There are a number of things you need to research from your financial budgeting, to the specifications of each car you are thinking about buying to best serve your needs and wants from a car… through to finding a car that is in good condition that will hopefully be reliable and so on.

2. Think about the emotions that are involved with the decision you are making
Emotion controls your life even more when you are depressed and unhappy because you are desperate to change the way you feel. Decisions made in desperation are usually ineffective and lead you in the wrong direction… into debt and even further down into your depressive rut.

Think about why you want to make the decision… is it for rational reasons?

Again analyze where the decision will take you, but this time realizing the emotions that are driving you to make the decision. Our emotions can drive you in positive directions when you have a positive focus, but when you are depressed your focus terribly negative and so you must ensure you are not being driven down the wrong path.

Remember that if you are trying to get a quick fix, whether it is to make quick money, or lose weight quickly or anything similar… quick fixes don't work. Even if they put a bandaid on the situation for the current moment, the bandaid will come off in the future, maybe a couple of weeks down the track… maybe a few months down the track… but when it does the problem you tried to fix quickly will come back to haunt you with much more intensity than it originally had.

You must plan what you are going to do to achieve your goals.

3. Plan your path

Once you decide that the decision is a positive one, you must plan what actions you need to take to follow through on the decision.

If you are deciding to eat healthier you may make a list of foods you are going to buy when you go to the supermarket… and not allow yourself to buy any other foods. This way you control your food intake more effectively.

If you are going to start exercising, you may look at joining a gym and getting assistance from one of the trainers at the gym to design a workout program. Or you may plan a 30 minute walk or run on 3 specific days of the week. To extend upon this, you could also plan to read a book on your goal topic, whether weight loss, muscle building etc. so you can improve on your plan as you go.

4. Take Action

Once you have gone through steps 1 to 3, you will have a good idea about where you are going and will have a very strong idea of where the decision will take you. Once you have come to step 4 and decided that you are going to go ahead with it, then you have a positive decision that you need to take action on.

Without action you are not going to get results. So use your plan and take action.
