More people are cycling on British roads these days and there are a couple of different reasons for this. Many people are in a position whereby they cannot justify the cost of running a car in order to get to and from work every day. Petrol is extremely costly, as is insurance. For other people environmental concerns are cited as a reason for not wanting to use a car every day. As well as being healthier than using a car, cycling is a great deal more cost effective.
If a bike is compared with a car then there is no contest when it comes to the amount of protection that one offers in relation to the other. If a car collides with a bike then there is very little chance of the person in the car being injured in any way. The person on the bike however is particularly vulnerable, and people that get hit by cars when on bikes can sometimes be killed. Of course, people in cars do not mean to collide with cyclists, and it is often the result of not paying enough attention to the fact that there may be a cyclist using the road.
If a person gets knocked from a bike and does not land in a place where they are in immediate risk (like the middle of the road), then the person should keep as still as possible. Serious injury is only compounded by any movement and so stillness is important until paramedics arrive. If injuries are not that bad then a victim needs to get important information from the driver that has driven into them. Then need to get the drivers name, number, and address, as well as the make, model, and registration number of the car. The name, number and address of any eyewitness should also be taken.
If a person is badly injured then they will not be able to get the relevant information from the person that has caused the accident. If this is the case then it is the job of the police to retrieve this information. This information will then be made available to the personal injury solicitor that represents the injured person, and used to help the injured person to get compensation.
It is never going to be possible to completely eradicate the fact that people that are knocked from bicycles in cars, getting injured in the process. It is possible though, for cyclists to minimise the chances of getting involved in an accident and getting hurt. In terms of making sure that a cyclist is protected against being injured it is important to wear a helmet. It is also important to wear knee and elbow pads if a person wants to be really safe. A cyclist needs to be protected during times of poor light, like dusk and dawn. High visibility clothing is therefore important, as are lights.
