Swing coach extraordinaire Pete Cowan believes it’s only a matter of time before the new world number one wins a Major.
The former Tour winner is regarded as one o the world’s finest coaches, having worked with the likes of Darren Clarke (TaylorMade Burner SuperLaunch Irons= http://www.mygolfwholesale.com/goods-915-TaylorMade+Burner+SuperLaunch+Irons.html ), Colin Montgomerie, Paul McGinley and Sergio Garcia – as well as two of this year’s Major champions, Graeme McDowell and Louis Oosthuizen.
Cowan’s on-off relationship with Westwood (TaylorMade RAC Satin TP Wedge) began in the mid-nineties.
“Lee has been knocking on the door for quite a while now,” he told the Sheffield Times. “It’s only a matter of time before he steps through it.”
The Worksop man won twice (Taylor Made Rossa Ghost Daytona Putter= http://www.mygolfwholesale.com/goods-1052-Taylor+Made+Rossa+Ghost+Daytona+Putter.html ) in the 12 months after hooking up with Cowan on his way to world number four.
But the 37-year-old almost gave up on the game after in a dramatic tumble to 259 in the rankings.
Cowan turned him around and he went on to win the Race to Dubai last year, among other titles (Taylormade Rossa Tourismo Putter).
“Lee has always said he likes to be where it hurts because in the end it’s all about being able to handle the situation and the pressure that goes with it,” continued Cowan.
“Confidence, of course, is another key factor. Just look at his record this year.
“I always say to Lee and other golfers that the road to success is always under construction. You never get there, you just have to keep working harder and when you get to number (TaylorMade Rescue TP Hybrid) one in the world you have to work even harder.”
Meanwhile, Westwood met up with staff and students at his Golf School in Cheshire this week, before flying to Shanghai.
Joe Lester, a student at the school, based at the Macdonald Portal Golf Resort, spoke on behalf of his peers.
“We were delighted to hear that Lee had become world number one,” he said. “He has set a great example to us and other junior golfers in the UK and worldwide and has been an excellent mentor to all of golf school students since we started the BTEC course in September this year.
“We all hope that with his continued advice and encouragement we will be able to emulate his success one day.”
School Director Karl Morris added: “We certainly hope our talented students can enjoy similar success in their golfing careers.”
