SME coir exporters in India have a reason to rejoice as export volumes for 2009-10 grew 15% more than the target set by the MSME Ministry for the last financial year. According to the official estimates, coir exports touched Rs 804 crore during the last financial year as against the Rs 700-crore mark set for the said fiscal.
"It is commendable that the coir export sector managed to surpass the set target despite the recessionary pressures that resulted in sluggish demand and lower sales for most part of 2009-10," said Muthoot Balan, proprietor of Balaji Coir Products, a small-sized coir exporting unit in Kollam, Kerala.
In terms of volume, coir exports grew by 47.31% to 2,94,508.05 tonnes in 2009-10, as compared to 1,99,924.94 tonnes in 2008-09, while the commodity exports clocked 25.46% growth in value terms during the previous fiscal.
"Initiatives undertaken by the SME coir export units to improve their product quality, expedite delivery mechanism as well as diversify their product mix have also contributed towards impressive coir export growth for 2009-10," said a senior advisor of Coir Board Export Promotion, who did not wish to be named.
Commenting on the export figures, VS Vijayaraghavan, chairman of the Coir Board, further assured that country's coir export figures are likely to go much higher in the years to come as necessary steps are being taken to incentivise coir exports.
