Given our large population originally from the Indian subcontinent, it's not surprising that Clifton Indian restaurants flourish here. In the last few years a whole crop of smart new Clifton Indian restaurants has opened, offering Indian cuisine which is far more authentic and far more diverse than in most traditional curry houses, and prepared by chefs who have trained extensively in some of the top hotels in India. What's more, these new Clifton Indian restaurants have brought Indian cuisine much more into the mainstream when it comes to eating out.
The new breed of Clifton Indian restaurants often have a spacious modern interior, with a long bar and seating area for the many people who just come in for a drink -- frequently a choice of more than 60 cocktails.
Of the traditional dishes, cuisine from north India (for example lamb shanks simmered in yoghurt gravy with chosen spices, a traditional Punjabi dish), have become standard fare at the new Clifton Indian restaurants.
Clifton Indian restaurants also have a good selection of vegetarian options such as Hara Chana Tikki - crispy fried galettes of spinach and chickpea lentils filled with mozzarella with tangy mint sauce and a colourful salad. Traditional desserts include carrot cake served with ice cream, a particular joy.
Clifton Indian restaurant lunchtime offerings are a good value buffet, much appreciated by the large numbers workers that frequent Clifton Indian restaurants.
Over the years, Clifton Indian restaurants have built up an excellent reputation, and some now offer a new menu focusing on south Indian cuisine. Clifton Indian restaurant diners can now select between traditional dishes and 'fusion' dishes - that is, cuisine which combines influences from different parts of India. Seafood dishes are popular, especially grilled monkfish with chilli and garlic sauce, and Malabari Crab. New vegetarian menus are typified by Phaldari Kofta, fruit dumplings in rich gravy, and there is also a wide variety of mouth-watering meat dishes from the north of India, such as Chooza Makhari, tandoori-grilled tikka of chicken strips in yoghurt and tomato gravy.
If any of this sounds appetizing to you, it's time you get out and try a few of the new Clifton Indian restaurants to give your taste buds a tantalizing treat.
