Chiropractic Education – What it Involves

Alternative health care treatments are increasingly becoming more popular with athletes, whiplash patients, and individuals who have back pain. Many colleges offer chiropractic therapy as a degree distinction. The entry requirements, structure, teaching methods, and nature of the coursework will vary from school to school. However, the same overall goals, techniques, and practices are taught to every student to successfully prepare them for the professional workforce after graduation.

Chiropractors diagnose and treat problems that are linked to the nervous system. In general chiropractors are taught to fix misalignments in the spinal joints that have a bad effect on the health of the nervous system and the individual. The results of this problem may show up in an individual as diminished health and a lower resistance to disease. To fix the misalignment in the spinal joints chiropractors manipulate the spine within a structured process to create a healthier nervous system and patient.

Prospective students have to adhere to the admission requirements set forth by all chiropractor graduate programs. To be considered for admission into a chiropractor program students must have successfully completed at least 90 credit hours of transferable coursework that equals a bachelor's degree. Most accredited chiropractic colleges require a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average or better that matches the presented degree for admission. Many programs at the graduate level require a minimum of undergraduate credits to have been completed in basic sciences to help prepare students for the coursework that will be involved in the chiropractic program.

During the first two years of graduate studies most chiropractic colleges provide a foundation for chiropractic care. Courses of this nature may include biochemistry, cardiopulmonary systems, anatomy, and public health. The third and fourth years of chiropractic study have students doing a more hands on approach to learning. Courses in this area may include practical instruction, spinal adjustment, and manipulation. These areas are a teaching priority because as a chiropractor these skills are used the most in patient care.

Students will have to obtain their license in the state they intend to practice in. Upon completion of the program every student will have to take the national exam set up by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. The exam consists of three parts. The first part will test students in six basic science areas that include: chemistry, spinal anatomy, general anatomy, pathology, physiology, and microbiology. The second part will test students in six clinical science areas that include: general diagnosis, neuromusculosketal diagnosis, principles of chiropractic, and diagnostic imaging. The third section of the exam will consist of nine clinical areas, which include case history, physical examination, and chiropractic techniques. Almost every state requires licensed chiropractors to continue education throughout their careers to stay current on chiropractic care and to maintain their licensure.

With the continued growth of programs throughout the country prospective students will have a wide range of options of which chiropractic education they want to receive. The successful practice will also continue to grow as more individuals gain a degree in chiropractic care. Becoming a chiropractor requires work and dedication, but for individuals that finish college, continue to learn, and enjoy helping patients in a non-surgical way a chiropractic career is a fulfilling one.
