Changing your Beliefs, by Sharon Mayo

Belief: Any cognitive content held as true; Agreement
with a given world view.

As we grow and develop, we take on ideas that are taken
on faith and can not be scientifically tested. These
ideas become images that are "Real." An example of this
might be, "educated people with a PhD are richer than
non-educated people." This may or may not be true.

We manifest these beliefs through interactions of
parents, peers, mentors, media, publications,
educational material or society institutes. Beliefs
are a shared system of beliefs and values that help
define the social, cultural, religious, physical and
psychological world in which we live. Every culture
develops a system of values that are applied to meet
a culture's need. Our understanding of the values of
a culture and our acceptance or rejection of those
values is often based upon our own belief system.

Often we can't say where we got a certain belief from.
Much of what we believe is not a result of scientific

reasoning or experience but rather from some idea
lying about in our minds. Some of these beliefs are
generational, meaning we learned the information from
our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents.
My parents told me "that women are not successful.
"They didn't do anything wrong, they just passed down
information that was passed down to them for eighteen
generations.

A lot of beliefs come from ignorance or fear. We may
feel anxious, apprehensive or afraid of a possible or
probable situation or event. There may be a perceived
risk or danger, real or not. A Caucasian may feel
threatened about someone of a different ethnicity. A
Catholic may have a dislike for a Buddhist because the
belief systems are different. There are situations
where an able bodied person is afraid of someone with
a disability. There is the fear that they may become
disabled or appear the way the disabled person is.
Negative beliefs can be changed through positive

affirmations and positive actions.

Some of our beliefs are positive and healthy. We
believe that we are powerful and can change the world.
People take on causes that do change the world. We
may believe that we can do anything we want, and we
overcome many challenges. Belief is about attitude.
Attitude determines how well we do something. Our
attitude is a complex mental state involving beliefs
and feelings and values and dispositions to act in
certain ways.

Gandhi said "Keep your thoughts positive, Thoughts
become your words; Keep your words positive, words
become your behaviors; Keep your behaviors positive,
Behaviors become your habits; Keep your habits positive,
habits become your values; Keep your values positive,
values become your destiny."

We can empower ourselves and the lives around us with
positive thoughts. We all have an auto-response within
us that helps to determine the choice we make. We all
have choices. If we have a flat tire, we can cuss and
swear about the bad situation or we can choose to make
the best of the situation. We can take a breath, make
phone calls or do paper work while we wait for the
tire to be changed. We may find out later that there
was a major car accident on the route we were going to
take which resulted in a major traffic jam. The flat
tire saved us from being in the traffic jam. We just
get to choose if we are going to better or bitter about
the event or situation. Everything that happens to us
happens for a reason. We get to learn to have an
attitude of Gratitude for everything that happens to us.

Robert Collier says, "One comes to believe whatever one
repeats to oneself sufficiently often, whether the
statement is true or false. It comes to be the dominating
thought in one's mind. If we think "we can do this
exercise", then we can. If we think "we can't do this
exercise", then we can't. Both of these statements are
right, it just depends on what thoughts we choose to
think.
