MSMEs in the carpet export sector have a reason to rejoice as exports of the commodity surged robustly in April 2010. According to the data provided by the Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC), carpet exports from India have grown by more than 18% in April 2010, as compared to the corresponding period last financial year, generating revenues worth US$47 million.
"Efforts undertaken by MSME carpet exporters to explore new markets such as Russia, Dubai, Brazil and Australia have paid off since rising demand for Indian carpets from these regions has largely contributed to the growth in export volumes witnessed in April 2010," said OP Garg, chairman of the CEPC.
Carpet exports plunged by about 12% to US$525 million in 2009-10 as compared to the previous financial year. However, resurgence in global demand in the first few months of 2010 has made the MSME carpet export sector optimistic of witnessing good growth in the current financial year.
"Improvement in the trading market has certainly provided an impetus to small-sized carpet export-oriented units and we expect exports to scale up in the coming days," said Subhas Kumar, proprietor of Gopal Carpet House, a small-sized carpet export firm in Jaipur.
Industry players expect further surge in export orders from emerging markets in view of the good response from overseas buyers.
