Caring for Oily Skin

Naturally oily skin can often be difficult to manage. Some people have an over active sebaceous gland which produces too much oil. This can lead to blemishes, open pores and acne.

Caring for oily skin requires a little more maintenance, because you need to reduce the naturally produced oil while still maintaining the right balance of moisture your skin needs. There are a few simple steps you can take to keep oily skin under control.

Wash your face twice a day with an oil based skin cleanser. Most cleaners marketed for oily skin will contain additional oils. Your skin needs this to keep the sebaceous gland from overproducing.
Use gentle soaps with natural ingredients. Many traditional soaps on the market contain drying compounds and chemicals which can damage your skin. Natural ingredients will keep the toxins out of your pores and make oily skin easier to manage. Plus, as in the tip above, you don't want anything that will dry out your skin and force your body to produce more oil.

Apply a refining mask twice a week. There are many facial masks available that are designed for oily skin. These masks will help balance the moisture in your skin, remove clogged dirt and toxins from your pores as well as shrink open pores.
Hydrate and moisturize morning and night. Using a good, nourishing moisturizer targeted for oily skin will keep your skin healthy and well hydrated. It's best to apply after washing your face before bedtime, and again in the morning after washing your face. If you wear makeup, a quality moisturizing lotion or cream will also provide a barrier between your skin and your makeup, reducing the likelihood of blemishes.

Oily skin is just like all other skin types in that it needs proper nourishment, care and hydration. A common mistake when treating oily skin is avoiding all oil based products, but in reality, denying moisture to your skin will just cause your body to over-react and make the problems worse.
