A large part of business management is having systems and procedures in place to deal with problems as and when they occur. No business is immune to having things go wrong; what matters is that you know how to handle them quickly and efficiently so your business suffers the least amount of downtime as a result.
Of course, no strategy can completely cover every conceivable problem that could occur. A big part of designing a plan of action is to make sure that it's not a static one; you should be able to adjust and amend it as necessary to take into account new problems that have occurred that you didn't previously have a solution for.
There are three main areas to bear in mind when it comes to deciding how well you would cope if things started to go awry. They are:
• Resources - do you have what you need to solve the problems?
• Staff - do you have enough people with enough training between them to cope?
• Knowledge - do you have a big enough knowledge base to draw on should you ever need to?
Resources can include having a fully up to date software library to ensure you can reinstall any piece of software at short notice. Staff may include either an in house IT team or an external company who could be called out at a moment's notice. It's also worth making sure that employees are trained to be able to perform more than one job, to plug any gaps in knowledge that may occur if alternative measures need to be taken to be able to carry on working.
Knowledge covers many different areas. Employee knowledge, knowledge of how systems and procedures should work, and knowledge of how things have been dealt with in the past (successfully or otherwise) can all help to ensure a speedy and successful outcome this time.
It's said that a mistake is only a mistake if we don't learn from it. This is certainly true where businesses are concerned, as a mistake which isn't rectified quickly can be extremely costly.
