The Internet has changed numerous aspects of many industries. Products, services and information are more widely accessible then they have ever previously been. However, does this extend to the hiring of skips?

Most modern skip hire companies will have an online presence of some kind. Whether it's just a directory or a full-blown website, they are usually straightforward enough to track down.

Another advantage of the Internet is that you can find companies that operate in your area far quicker than you might offline. Whilst in the past you might thumb through the Yellow Pages, now you can simply type your query into a search engine and gain access to a variety of local services.

The Internet will also allow you to weigh up your options before having to actually contact the skip hire companies themselves. If they have a website then you've got instant and straightforward way to see what services they offer, find out where they're based and work out what the company is all about. You may even have the opportunity to get a quote, there and then.

In terms of actually hiring a skip, you'll have to get in contact with the company to confirm the details. When you fill in an online form, more often than not they will either email a quote or phone you back to discuss it further.

Because there are so many variables associated with hiring a skip, it's often difficult to provide a finite quote instantly. They have to work out exactly what it is that you're throwing out, how much there will be and where you're located. These will have a significant bearing on the overall quoted price.

This means that before looking to seek a quote that you are fully aware of exactly what you're looking for. This means evaluating the work that you're going to be doing and judging the kind of levels of waste that you can expect to generate as a consequence.

You'll also have to be wary of exactly what you're throwing away. General waste is absolutely fine, this will include any types of rubbish that you'd generally throw away or recycle as well as wooden items, garden waste and other 'safe' items. However, if you're going to be getting rid of any hazardous goods or materials that will require specialist disposal, then you will need to consult the hire company first.

More often than not there will be certain terms of use that surround the hire of a skip, including a list of items that shouldn't be thrown away. So if you're pulling down an office building full of asbestos, you'll have to properly dispose of this through a waste management company equipped to deal with such materials. If this ends up in the skip, the hiring company isn't likely to be very happy. They may refuse to collect or even charge you an additional fee as a consequence.

For this reason it's important to be straight up with them from the outset. Outline what work you're doing, where it's going to be based and how much waste is likely to be accumulated. They will then be able to point you towards the skip size most suited to your needs and provide a more accurate quote.

One other thing to consider is obtaining a permit. If you're thinking of leaving your skip on public land, such as a road or pathway, you will need to contact the council in order to gain permission. It's a small issue, and one that the skip hire may do on your behalf, however it is vital that you have this sorted. This again is something that will need to be discussed when you come to hire the skip, which is why hiring online directly is challenging.

So whilst most skip hire companies can be found online and you may be able to get a quote, you will still need to discuss the terms of your hire with them. This often means a phone call to clarify the price, delivery times and any other conditions. This will give you the chance to discuss any potential issues and also to gauge the competitiveness of the quoted price.
