Can VoIP Phone Systems and Interns Really Save My Business Money?

The short answer is yes, yes they can. There are lots of easy ways to cut company costs, many of which don't even cross people's minds. In this economy, though, it should be at the top of everyone's list of things to think about when considering their businesses. Here are five of those ways to get you started:

1. Trim the fat. There are certain luxuries every office indulges in, most of which they don't even consider luxuries. Think about water coolers, for instance. Keeping them full can cost hundreds of dollars a month, while something as simple as a Brita filter and ice cubes can produce the same effect. Want hot water? That's what a microwave is for.

Likewise, encourage your employees to turn off their computers at the end of each day. Many, out of habit or laziness, leave theirs without thinking about how much energy they're really wasting energy that costs money. Hold a meeting with everyone in the office to brainstorm other ways to cut down on energy use.

2. Get a few interns. Why more people don't hire interns is a mystery. Interns are the best! You're getting free labor; they're getting free experience it's a win-win all around! Plus, you can assign them just about any task not that you shouldn't make sure they're actually getting experience with something other than the coffee machine. Make sure that they're given actual work to do that will challenge them and allow them to walk away knowing they learned something. Also, when their internship ends, be sure to give them a parting gift, whether money or otherwise. A couple hundred dollars will still be worlds less than what you'd pay an actual employee.

3. Switch to a VoIP phone system. VoIP systems don't cost nearly as much as regular phone systems, not to mention they're super convenient. You can choose from a number of plans and different types of VoIP IP phones, which look much like regular phones; ATA, in which a regular phone is hooked up to the computer; and Computer-to-Computer, in which everything is done with the computer.

4. Stay local. Exchange goods or services with local companies that can do something for you. Do you run a marketing firm? Talk to the head of the local office supply company and tell them you'll revamp their entire marketing scheme for a discount on office supplies. Do the same for that VoIP system and ask the provider for a lower rate. And hey this might be just the project to let those interns cut their teeth on!

Did you ever think saving your business money could be so easy? Not only that, you'll probably find that your company is miles more productive than it has been in a long time!
