What's in a name?
For many people having a great name for their web site means the world to them and if it isn't available, they may be willing to pay you for the name if it is one that you own.
What do you mean?
There is a niche market out on the World Wide Web and that market is the business of buying and selling web site domain names.
How Does This Work?
You can do this work with or without having a web site. It is just a simple process of going to a reputable domain processor and search for names in their "who is" database and if they are available, you buy them.
You do not need to pay for hosting for these names; you can leave them dormant. Then when someone comes along and wants a particular domain name that you own, they will have to pay you for the option of obtaining that name for their use.
That is a very simple explanation but it does involve:

Lets Get Started
For starters lets just stick to dot Com names not the others like dot Org or dot Net and such.
Find a good domain processor just by doing a simple web search and research each one and pick out one to do business with. For each name that you buy be sure and have your contact information available for all to see who owns that particular name. This information could be your web site, a P.O. Box or an email address, (don't leave your physical address to be known) just a means for someone to be able to contact you for purchasing one of your domain names.
Right now most common names can be bought for around 10 bucks or so. Do not buy from someone else when you first start out, just buy names that nobody owns and are available.
What Type Of Names To Buy?
That is the million-dollar question and there are a lot of opinions on the answer.
There are countless avenues and business names you could buy but here is a sample example of how this method and business could work for you in the long run.
Simply do a search of every musical group you can find and buy up all the names you can afford that aren't already owned. Be a little selective however you would be surprised how many musical groups that are out there that do not own their bands name as a domain name.
As these groups get popular and then try and proceed and to set up a web site, they will find that they do not own the name and thus will need to come to you to try and buy that domain name from you.
There is no set price for what you can charge for the name; it is between you and the potential buyer to negotiate a price that works out for the both of you.
The profit depends on how much they want and need the name and how much they are willing to pay for it.
As you can see by now, the buying and selling of domain names can be a very profitable business for a long term minded individual that has a few bucks to spend.
