The first thing to remember is to write out multiple drafts of your speech. You can either use pen and paper or better yet a good word processor to help you write out your draft. If you have a computer and you don't want to spend hundreds of dollars buying a word processor, Google Docs is free and quite effective for the task at hand.
Second, when writing down your speech or toast, think about the main theme that you want to impart to the listeners. Do you want your speech to be funny? Do you want your speech to be inspirational. Just think about one theme and stick with it through the end. Don't stray from the main theme to make your speech cohesive and succinct.
Third, make the tone of your speech conversational and causal. Use short sentences and don't be afraid to bend the English grammar a bit. The truth is people don't talk the way they write, but you can write the way you talk.
Fourth, use simple words. Don't use 100 dollar words from the dictionary that no one will understand. Your audience are of different backgrounds and you want to cater to all of them. So use metaphors and strong imagery in your speech rather than dictionary words.
These are great tips I picked up that helped me write a good brides wedding speech on my wedding. I was so proud of myself because I made something that had a profound effect on my husband and the people listening. I made a great speech that made the wedding complete.
