Breast augmentation is still an incredibly popular cosmetic surgery to get here in the US. Thousands of women opt for this surgery every year in an effort to either boost their breast size, or to correct some sort of asymmetry. Soon, women will have a very unique option when searching for breast enlargement surgery.

It's called stem cell breast augmentation, and although it may be pricier than normal breast implants, the outcome may be worth it.

So, what is this surgery which sounds so high tech, bordering on sci-fi? Well, it's pretty much exactly what it sounds like.

The stem cell breast augmentation procedure involves using your body's own cells to generate new breast tissue - your own. The procedure is still in experimental phases, so it's only available on a limited basis so far in Britain, and is still being reviewed for approval here in the US.

In the US, a similar procedure called fat transfer can be performed, but it does not involve the utilization of stem cells. Fat transfer is simply taking the fat cells from one area of the body and transplanting them into the breast, there is no growth of new fatty tissue like there would be with stem cell breast augmentation.

Unlike the controversy that surrounds other types of stem cell therapies, this type of usage is not controversial since it does not use stem cells from an embryo. Instead, stem cells that are extracted from fat on the patient's body are used to help cultivate new fat in the breast area.

Hence, the patient ideally starts to grow their own breast tissue with the new transplanted fat and stem cells, at the new site in the breasts. Often times the fat is taken from areas where the patient would like to give up some fat anyways. The buttocks, thighs, and belly may be areas that fat can be extracted.

The newly cultured fat and stem cells are then transplanted into areas of the breast which the patient would like to see fuller. Because these types of cells are unique in that they can transform into any other kind of cell, the thought is that they will generate more breast tissue on their own.

The patient's own blood is also transplanted to the area, so that the fat can begin to grown and multiply in the one localized area. Ideally, if the procedure works, the fat only grows to the desired size, and the breasts are then augmented by the patient's very own fat cells, to their desired size and shape.

Long term studies have not been performed on this stem cell breast augmentation procedure, simply because it is too new a concept to test out that way. So there is no way to tell for certain whether the breast augmentation resulting from the procedure would be truly permanent.

Theoretically, it would be a permanent procedure, but there is always risk of weight loss and breast reduction. There also could be a risk of the new fatty tissue migrating to either a different area of the breast or to other areas of the body.

While the simpler procedure of fat transfer breast augmentation costs about the same as normal breast implants do, the addition of the stem cell technology would add roughly $5,000 to the cost. So you would probably be looking at a tab of around $10,000 to get the stem cell version of breast augmentation done from start to finish.
