Benidorm resort and tourists have been satirized by a TV programme based in the UK but it is a popular travel destination for a reason. Based in the Alicante providence of Spain, Benidorm is on the western Mediterranean Sea and is a Valencian coastal town. Benidorm has not always been the tourist hot spot it is today and was in fact a quiet coastal fishing village prior to the 1960's but is the fifth most populated city in the area.

Benidorm is a great place to spend a holiday because of the Mediterranean climate which means a guarantee of warm sunny days and not much rain and with sandy beaches Benidorm is thriving under the tourist trade. The cityscape has changed dramatically within the last 50 years as the current sky line has been compared to New York with several large and tall hotel buildings and apartment complexes. The actual view of Bendorm even with the massive skyscrapers is dwarfed by the huge mountain range in the bachdrop called the Puig Campana and is one of the most impressive and naturally beautiful mountain ranges in the Costa Brava at 1406m at the peak.

The unique geographical location is what has given Benidorm its popularity and even the city is affected by the natural geography being split between two main areas and fronted by beaches called Poniente and Levante. Another key point that differentiates Benidorm from other Spanish resort towns is that even though it has a high skyline there is plenty of space and green land within the city so there is a feeling of space and structure not all Spanish cities have. There is also an uninhabited Island off shore giving the sea view a dramatic centre piece.

The initial increase in the tourist trade in Benidorm is due to the invention of package holidays and their increase in popularity especially in the UK. Benidorm has developed along-side this way of life having a central district dedicated to a lively nightlife, restaurants and bars. There are also massive family based theme parks local to Benidorm to cater to the tourists such as Terra Mitica located in the city centre which has thrived under the Paramounts brand.

There are several magnificent hotel constructs like Gran Hotel Bali which was opened in 2002 and has a four star rating and at 186m tall it had the title of the tallest skyscraper in Spain for five years until the CTBA towers opened in Madrid. Even without the title it is still an impressive building.

Benidorm might not have much historical significance in terms of Spains history but has become a consequential city of tourism that is welcoming and quite literally designed to cater to your holiday needs.

Sophie is an online blog writer for many different online travel sites. Part of Sophie's job is to travel to various cities or to trial various services. It is at times a very rewarding job and very diverse because of the sheer amount of culture and people that she meets but it can also be very isolating! One thing is for sure, in order to make things smooth on her transfers when she arrives at the destination airport, Sophie always uses Resorthoppa private transfers from the airport to her resort or private hotel accommodation, as it takes the stress out of hailing cabs or catching a coach. When not travelling, Sophie loves to spend time with her friends and catch up on the latest soap operas with her mum!
