Almost anyone who goes into the backcountry is at risk of a bear attack. Campers, hunters, hikers, fishermen or anyone who just wants to commune with nature; all are exposed to the potential of a bear attack.
Bears are mostly curious and driven by an acute sense of smell. When they are hungry things change. Bears look like lumbering oafs-they are not. They can cover 25-30 feet in a heartbeat. If you are 30 feet away I guarantee your heart will beat and very fast.
For homeowners near mountainous areas or campers out in the wilderness keeping food wrapped and covered is a must so the smells don't draw the bears. Campers and homeowners who are at risk can arm themselves with bear pepper spray.
If a human-bear confrontation occurs, pepper spray may be the best weapon to repel a bear. So much so that the Sierra Club is recommending that anyone who goes into bear country has bear pepper spray.
Bear pepper spray is more effective than a bullet from a gun because it burns the bears' eyes and nose. Their mucous membranes are very sensitive to it. IT WORKS!
Bears are a little bit more aggressive at two times in the year: in the spring right after hibernation-they haven't eaten in months; and fall, right before they go into hibernation-getting ready for the long slumber. During these two times of the year bears will do things they might not normally do to get food-like break into your house.
It is this same keen sense of smell that drives bears to food that makes bear pepper spray so effective.
Ideally what you want to do is create a wall of pepper spray mist between you and the bear. If the bear chooses to leave fine. If the bear continues to advance towards you he'll go into the pepper spray wall and his sense of smell will drive him into retreat.
Always look for the EPA seal on the can of spray. The can should have at least 6 seconds of spray with a range of no less than 20 feet. The spray should have at a minimum 225 grams of contents with no more than 2% oleoresin capsicum (OC).
Guard Alaska Bear Pepper Spray is an effective deterrent in reducing injuries from bear attacks both to the bears and humans. Never go into the backcountry without it. It could save your life.
