Some of the common causes are:

Sciatic back pain, impingement of the nerve, also known as the pinched nerve. Slipped disc also known as the ruptured or herniated disc. Osteoarthritis. Muscular debilitation. Degeneration of the spine.

In cases regarding the nerve roots or details of the discs in your back such as, isthmic spondylolisthesis, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, or spinal stenosis, MRI scans have become very useful and the preferred modality for looking for the cause of back pain. MRI scans are normally taken after x-rays have been taken and are painless. MRI scans provide information that can help rule out spinal infections or tumors as the cause of back pain.

Muscle relaxants are used to treat back spasms. They are a bit controversial for a few reasons. These type of drugs are known to make you sleepy and if used for long periods of time, can cause a dependency for the drug and have been known to cloud the mind. Muscle relaxants are beneficial to treat back spasms but need to be taken with caution.

Relaxing the muscles in the back is the best treatment for back spasms. Many ways to relax the back muscles are by gentle stretching, massaging the area, using heat and using a tens unit.
