Italy is a beautiful place to spend a holiday but there is no escaping the fact that Italy in the middle of summer is hot - very hot. A glimpse at how the Italians avoid the heat can offer some pointers on how we all could survive.
Italy is a country that contains so many towns and cities of cultural and historical significance that it can sometime seem that one never has quite enough time to see all that the country has to offer.
Each of the major Italian cities are packed with so much to see, so much to do and so much glorious food to eat that many feel that it's essential to make the most of every second that they are in town.
While summers see the likes of Florence, Rome and Milan packed with visitors, it's interesting to see that the locals are flocking to cooler destinations.
Indeed, cities often seem almost deserted of Italians in the hottest month of August. This should give tourists some idea of how to enjoy Italy in the middle of the summer - do as the locals do.
So, what is it that the locals do exactly?
Italians have long since realised that their crowded, noisy cities are just too hot when the temperatures rise. They leave their cities to unsuspecting tourists and take the opportunity to head for some of their country's most picturesque spots.
They opt for the mountains, the seaside and the areas around the Italian lakes. Lake Como and Lake Garda, for instance, often have a much cooler climate, due to their proximity to the Alps.
If you want to avoid the Italian heat then copy the locals - avoid the big cities and head for the coutryside!
