Bladder infections or bladder inflammation is a bacterial disease that is prevalent among women in the age group of 20 to 50 years. This happens due to unsafe sexual activity, inappropriate toilet hygiene, low water intake or urinary tract abnormality. These factors restrict the functioning of the urinary system.
Medical studies suggest that pregnant women are all the more susceptible to the infectious disease. The bacterium enters from the intestinal tract to the urethra through the rectum. Later on, the bacterium multiplies and advances towards the urinary bladder or kidneys. These microbes stick to the bladder walls and trigger symptoms such as abdominal pain, fever, urgent and frequent urine flow etc.
Moreover, the women body shows hormonal changes during pregnancy which makes her all the more susceptible to the infectious disease. During pregnancy, the progesterone levels increase considerably which leads to the stretching of uterus. Eventually, the ureters compress it to accommodate the uterus which is the birth canal for the fetus containing the unborn baby. These compressed ureters are unable to empty the bladders during urinary secretion.
During the later stage of pregnancy, the baby restricts the flow of urine from the urinary bladder. The decreased radius of ureters obstructs the disposal of urine. Hence, the urine resides inside the bladder for a long span of time. During this stage, the bacterium multiplies and aggravates the
bladder infections. This infection can lead to pre-mature delivery or kidney damage under adverse conditions.
Hence, the gynecologist conducts a urinalysis during prenatal visit. If the results are negative, then there are lesser chances of developing the syndrome during pregnancy. However, any trace of bacterium in the urinary tract will increases the risk of acquiring
bladder infections. Under such circumstances, the doctor recommends an antibiotic treatment.
Hence, pregnant women should follow certain precautions to avoid build up of the infectious disease.
