One thing which you may not consider when you work as a nail technician is the safety of the products that you are using. You order the products and you use them as effectively as you can. After all, why would you worry about their ingredients? They are designed especially for use in nail treatments so surely they are safe? Unfortunately that is not always the case.
Understanding Nail Product Allergies
Most nail products contain irritants and corrosive materials. Every single person will suffer a reaction from irritant products. However the level of irritation will vary from person to person. This means that what one person will find irritable, another will not react at all. It could take years for a person to develop a skin allergy caused by nail products, but on the other hand some people will react straight away.
Typically most people will not react after the occasional treatment. It is when a product is used frequently over a long space of time that sensitivity will often build up. That is when a reaction could occur. So if you do find yourself using the same treatments on regular clients then you should warn them about the potential dangers. Never apply a treatment more frequently than is needed.
Also don't forget that you yourself are in danger of developing a reaction from the products that you use. For this reason it may be a good idea to wear disposable plastic gloves while you perform treatments.
Which products should you be Wary of?
While all nail products tend to contain irritants in them, there are some that are potentially more dangerous than others. These include nail adhesives and acid based primers. The latter are usually found in artificial nail systems and they can cause burns if brought into contact with the skin. Nail adhesives are the worst for causing burns. This is especially the case when they penetrate the skin through clothing. They react with the man made fibres to cause severe burning that could require cosmetic surgery.
Overall you should be wary of all nail products and you should always take necessary health and safety precautions if you are to avoid any potential problems. All dangerous products should come with a warning on the label and you can always find out more information from a Material Safety Data Sheet which can be applied for from your supplier.
