Staircases serve a far more important function than just providing a means to reach various levels in a home. They can and should be an integral part of one's home décor. We often do not give our homes' staircases the kind of importance attention they deserve at the design stage. This means that we wind up with rather functional staircases that add nothing to our homes' character and ambience.

This is surely not the best way to go. Staircases should be aesthetically merged into our home's interior décor, and should offset it in a pleasant manner. If we have not kept aesthetics in mind while putting up our staircases during initial construction, this can be corrected when we remodel our homes. A good architect can advise you on how to do this without compromising the overall structure. Both indoor and outdoor staircases, if any, should be attended to. Metal staircases are obviously better than wooden staircases for outdoor use, since they can take the brunt of changing weather and also look ruggedly rustic, adding to a homely look.

Indoors, a straight flight of steps can be most practical, cost-effective and convenient for the purpose of transporting household goods across levels. However, even contemporary staircases can be decoratively embellished to add to the general ‘feel' of a home. On the other hand, nothing beats decorative staircases when it comes to optimizing space and opening up aesthetic possibilities. Spiral staircases come in a dazzling range of models and configurations these days.

We are no longer limited to plain, mundane wooden staircases these days. No matter whether we choose straight or spiral staircases, an interior decorator can use them to add great value to our homes' character. For instance, some of the classiest homes have wrought iron staircases with gold leaf, or even glass staircases. This kind of opulence may not be to everyone's taste or budget. Indeed, wrought iron staircases do need an appropriate interior setting, and not all modern homes can carry them off in style. However, stylish wooden staircases or even well-designed metal staircases can fit in pleasingly and add much to the comfort and convenience of one's home.

Putting in aesthetic staircases invariably involves a not inconsiderable expense, and it is best not to reply on one's own judgment while deciding on the right ones. Ideally, an architect and interior designer should work together while planning staircases for a home. If these are put in retrospectively, the home's structural integrity needs to be kept in mind, so professional advice is still called for. However, once the right kind of staircases are incorporated, they can transform a home's character considerably.
