Build a rapport with your mechanic for better results even if you are not sure what is under the hood of your car! Here are easy steps to follow.
1) Be loyal. A good mechanic knows that he needs to provide you with honest, quality work at a fair price if he wants your loyalty. Once you have developed a relationship, they often reward your loyalty by waiving minor fees or offering special incentives.
2) Tell them what you were doing when the problem started. List prior and current conditions such as tyres squealing, engine backfire, smoke emission, brake noises, etc.
3) Do not tell a mechanic how to do his job. If you could fix it, you would not be at his shop in the first place.
4) Avoid vague statements. If you say "just fix it", they may fix things that do not need to be fixed.
5) Ask questions until you are sure you know what is being done to your car. You have the right to ask for more information.
6) Obtain a written estimate. A reputable shop should have no problem showing you the problem areas and explaining repair or maintenance options.
7) Do not stop prescribed automotive maintenance services or specialty products on your own, even if your car problems have been resolved. If your supply runs out, ask your mechanic whether you should obtain more.
8) Test drive your car and take it back if it is not running right. Schedule another appointment if the same problem recurs or if new problems arise.
