Save on fuel with a few tweaks and changes to your driving habits.
With petrol prices sky-rocketing, it is wise to take a second look at how you drive as it affects how often you have to fill up. Use these money-saving measures for better mileage and to help care for the environment too.
1) Smooth Operator - Maintain a steady speed; the more you step on the accelerator, the more petrol you will use. If you are driving a manual, avoid revving the engine hard as it wastes fuel. For automatic cars, ease back on the accelerator once your car has gained sufficient speed. Studies have shown that up to 30 percent of the difference in kilometres per litre (kpl) is due to driving habits alone. By taking these steps, you will be helping the environment by saving over a ton of CO2 emission per year.
2) Slow Down - It is best to go with the traffic flow. Speeding p or slowing down can have a significant effect on fuel economy. So when you reach cruising speed, back off on the accelerator a little.
3) Cut Trunk Junk - You will save money if you clean out your boot, so leave your golf bag at home if you are not playing. Every additional 45kg can also lower your mileage by two percent. If you have roof racks, remove or load them to minimise wind resistance.
4) Plan Your Journey - Avoid peak hours. See if you can reschedule your trip to an earlier or later time, or use another route to avoid congestion. You may also consider taking public transport or car pooling.
5) Stay Inflated - Under-inflated tyres can cause significant mileage loss. Even one pound per square inch (psi) below the recommended amount can reduce mileage by three per cent. Check the manual for the right specifications.
