Why Phone Calls Are Better Than Letters

What do you do when you want to get in touch with someone you know? Do you sit down to write them a letter or send them a card or do you pick up the phone to call them? Or perhaps you log on to a social networking site you know they use, to see if they are on there? Our modern world means that we have lots of different ways that we can get in touch with the people we know and love. But which way is your favourite way of getting in touch?



For many people, nothing will beat a simple phone call. There might be lots of other ways that are quick and easy to indulge in as well. But are they really better than calling someone up on the telephone?



A phone call has many advantages over sending a letter, for example. For starters it is more immediate. If you want to send a letter to someone living in a foreign country, you would have to write it and then take it to the post office to see how much the postage would cost. Once you have queued and paid for the stamp, you have to wait for the postal system to get it from your local post office all the way across to the destination country. That could take several days - and of course there is always the chance that it might get lost en route.

Now think about a telephone call. Provided the person you are calling is home, all you need to do is pick up the phone and dial their number. You could be talking to them within seconds of deciding to give them a call.



But while this method is immediate in the sense of time, it is more immediate in other ways as well. You can talk naturally and you will probably talk about a lot more than you would in a simple letter. Even if you were to write a few pages you wouldn't cover as much ground as you would in a long conversation on the phone!



That is why so many people like chatting on the phone. You can catch up on all the recent gossip, and it is a two way event. You might be able to read a letter and then reply to it, but often it just isn't the same somehow. When you phone someone you can get an idea of what is going on in their life, while sharing news of your own.



And of course nowadays it doesn't matter what country you are phoning either. For example, cheap calls to Brazil are just as readily available as cheap calls to your own country.
