Less than a year ago, practically no one had heard of Twitter. I remember getting on the site and thinking, what is this? The interface looked strange to me from my days of MySpace and Facebook. I didn't think this would catch on right away, but then I started noticing that it was a way for businesses to market themselves free of charge.

Wow! Soon practically everyone will be on it. And anyone that starts an online business with a Web 2.0 property will surely be on Twitter, too. Eventually, I started to realize that I could strategically monetize Twitter in a few easy steps.

1. Open your account. This is the first step, of course. Make sure you pick a name that accurately fits your business. If you're a floral shop in Las Vegas, you want to be taken seriously.

A name like "mackdaddy" isn't going to work to well, even if it's true. Try something like your name "jackdoe." If your name is taken, try "jackdoelasvegasflorist." Don't forget that you need to have a photo to be taken seriously.

2. Start finding your friends. This includes any friend, client, or potential client. Click on "follow" right under the photo. After you've done that start looking for other florists in Las Vegas and follow the people that are following them. Same goes if you're a realtor or cars salesman or affiliate marketer. Others will start following you back, and your presence will grow.

Make sure you set aside a few hours to do this: Work toward following 1,500 people. Just click away.

3. Wait a day and see what followers you get. You may get people that are following you because you first followed them. It's very probable that you'll get brand new followers, too. Make sure you follow them back. It's very important to make mutual followers. You'll want to keep doing this for a few days.

4. Start sending out "tweets." These are brief messages under 140 characters. You can make a tweet real quick about anything you are doing that's relevant to your business from a phone or anywhere.

Delete tweets that are auto-responders generated by a computer like, "Thanks for following. Look forward to tweeting." Delete these people and anyone that doesn't follow you within a week (they probably never will).

If by the first week you aren't able to DM or direct message some of the people you're following, go ahead and delete them. By this time, you'll have all followers.

5. Break above 2,000. The rule is that your followers must be within 10% of the amount you are following to be able to follow more than 2,000. This is a huge accomplishment, and it can be done. Keep going with this method diligently for the first two weeks to get there.

6. Make an occasional offer. You don't want to do it too often, but this is how Twittter gets monetized.

Twitter is the fastest growing social network in history. Some even contribute the new president's successful election to his following on Twitter.
