I'm pretty much preaching to the choir when I point out that traveling is a big part of your college life. It's a ritual, a rite of passage. We leave home, go to school, study like mad for four years and when it's all over, we celebrate with the trip of a lifetime. When I graduated, I hiked across much of Australia, and then stayed in a luxury resort for two weeks, prepping myself for the job hunt waiting for me once I got back home. A lot of my friends opted for the always popular backpacking across Europe option. The hostels are cool, but everyone should also tack at least a few days onto a resort to pamper themselves.

What many people don't realize is that there are huge discounts to be found if you cut your travel agent out of the deal, take the time to separate out the individual components of your trip and book each of them yourself by taking advantage of web sites that offer discount hotel rooms or airfare. Consider a trip to Italy, for example. If you're flying out of New York, spending a month or so there, including a week at a luxury hotel like the Villa Alighieri Hotel Venice, travel agents will be quoting you prices that will make you look fondly at your tuition bill. We're talking five grand or more, easily. But, if you break that trip down and search out bargains, it becomes much more reasonable. Take the

Italy hotel , for example. For the same hotel included in the package "deal," I can find rooms online for as little as $39US per night. So for a week, let's call that $280. You could go the hostel route for really cheap, or use online tools to find budget hotels in all the major cities, including Rome, Venice and Florence for as little as $16US per night. At that rate, three weeks comes in at under $350. Booking a flight yourself can net you round-trip airfare for under $1000. So your month in Italy, including transportation and accommodation comes in at less than $1700.

Who knew the Internet could save you that kind of money! It takes very little effort to net very big savings.

Liz Morgan has been blogging about travel and discount travel options since she completed her first trek across the Australian Outback. She stayed at several prestigious
Australia hotels as part of a tour package purchased through her travel agent, but later discovered that she had overpaid compared to other vacationers she met who'd shopped around. When she planned a trip to Europe and it came time to locate a reasonably priced a

Greece hotel , Liz passed over the package deals and shopped online, saving enough money to stay an additional week. You can read her column advocating online hotel discounts in student newspapers at various college campuses.
