Australia, Baz Luhrmann's unique epic picture about the history of the country, features Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman. This is the second film of Luhrmann's that Kidman has been in (the first being Moulin Rouge), and Kidman was thrilled from the outset to be in the picture. In Vogue Magazine, Kidman talks about how she signed on immediately for the movie, since she would do any picture with Baz. Kidman was also especially excited to be making a picture about her native country.
Thanks to Luhrmann's signature inventive and eccentric style, everything about Australia is wildly over the top. Australia transcends genres as the movie goes on, changing from a Western to a romance, and then finally a World War II drama. And thanks to Luhrmann's wife Catherine Martin, Kidman's wardrobe changes just as often from gorgeous costume to gorgeous costume. The high budget film is full of spectacular theatrics and incredible cinematography. Kidman explains to Vogue that there were times on location in the Outback where the set was literally days away from fresh water. But the footage that they shot was amazing, and worth the effort!
The story is about a women who goes to Australia because she wants to sell her land but then when she gets there she finds out that her husband is dead and that his employee has been mistreating a mixed race buy and also that he has been cheating their company. The partner tries to sabotage her attempts so that she will have to sell her ranch to him. She ends up falling in love with Jackman's character. And the story continues on for three hours!
