As the daughter of a preacher, Tori Amos has often had references to religion in her work. Her 1992 debut album, "Little Earthquakes" had more than half of the songs referencing religion. Musings on wrongs and past wrongs is a theme often interwoven in her songs. The new release, "Abnormally Attracted to Sin", seems aptly named.
"Abnormally Attracted to Sin" revives the formula of "Little Earthquakes", which featured more than just her voice and a piano. Many fans prefer listening to her without a band, but often it can tend to create a sound that can seem repetitive.
"Abnormally Attracted to Sin" features seventeen brand new songs. If there's one thing that can be said about Tori Amos, it is that she's quite prolific. Although her voice takes center stage (and the ever present keyboards), but there are also strings, drums and electric guitars. But even in a single like "Welcome to England", a normal instrument found in a pop song still doesn't make Tori Amos sound like any other pop singer.
"Abnormally Attracted to Sin" should satisfy die-hard Tori Amos fans, although it may not necessarily pull in new fans. Several of the songs are very similar in melody, tempo and instrumentation. Her songs can be reminiscent to Peter Gabriel's in that they slowly unfold their brilliance only after repeat listening. Amos still incorporates her unique singing style with unusual pronunciations for effect, while using intense imagery and her breathy cry. Longing is one of the instruments not listed on "Abnormally Attracted to Sin" that Tori Amos can play so well. However, this can make understanding the lyrics next to impossible at times. It's just one of the things Tori Amos fans put up with.
Tori Amos has a strong fan base in both Europe and North America, almost assuring that this CD will more than cover the costs of making and producing it. Like most of Amos' previous CDs, the sales will come after word of mouth. This will be a great relief for Universal Republic, Tori's new label. The only real criticism is that there isn't anything drastically new in "Abnormally Attracted to Sin". Unlike many other singer-songwriters with staying power, such as the afore-mentioned Peter Gabriel, no new musical ground is broken here. It's pretty much the same old Tori her fans have come to adore.
