Gender identity disorder refers to individuals who are living as one gender but were born another biological sex and most often are having problems dealing with their situation. Psychiatrists use this term to explain the disorders that are related to issues of trans-gender identity and transsexuals. This classification is also used to refer to people who call themselves transsexuals, but they don't necessarily feel that it is a disorder.
Many people who are in the classification of having gender identity disorder state that they have felt like they were in the wrong bodies for most of their lives. Many people who are trans-gendered do not really see themselves as having a disorder. Some believe that they have simply been born with the wrong body or as the wrong sex.
Sex or Gender
Science and medicine have taken an active role in shaping attitudes towards sexuality and gender. Scientifically, possible physical construction occurring naturally at birth provides for the potential of multiple sexes that should be identified, yet culturally and socially we force individuals to identify themselves using either male or female.
Yet gender "differences" are often the outcomes of bad scholarship. Consider Admiral Insurance’s data. As Britain's Automobile Association (AA) correctly pointed out - women drivers tend to make more short journeys around towns and shopping centers and these involve frequent parking.
Men also mature later, die earlier, are more susceptible to infections and most types of cancer, are more likely to be dyslexic, to suffer from a host of mental health disorders, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and to commit suicide.
Women concentrate on their body (as they do in eating disorders: Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa). They flaunt and exploit their physical charms, their sexuality, their socially and culturally determined "femininity". They secure their Narcissistic Supply through their more traditional gender role
The issue with science and the medical community taking such a strong position with regard to sexual identity and gender is the social construction it furthers; we are left with the formality of a highly educated group within society placing labels on their opinion of "deviant".
Many physicians would argue that gender identity disorder is a true illness and needs to be treated. Whether it is truly a disorder or not, disorder gender identity issues can cause feelings of not belonging to any one group and can also cause individuals to not be accepted by other individuals.
