The Best Man toast is an integral part of any wedding reception. In fact, other than the first dance it is probably considered by many to be the most important pre-planned aspect of the reception. First and foremost keep them entertained. Stay away from long, drawn out, boring toasts that are full of inside jokes. Keep inside jokes for when you are alone with the happy couple and not in front of their guests who are wondering if you had too much to drink or not enough time to prepare. Entertain them by keeping it light, moving forward, humorous and not too long!

Make sure you stay away from quotes. That's right no one cares to hear how someone else defines love, marriage or anything else. They want to hear what you have to say about the man who chose you to stand by him and his lovely bride. If you are unable to come up with something original then do the American thing – BUY IT! That's right buy an original toast or speech. It is not really that hard to do. Go to Google or Yahoo search for a company that writes original ones (don't buy a pre-written one, or someone may have heard some or all of it and you'll look bad).

Try to keep your speech to under 3 minutes, in fact 2 minutes is a good length and if you are not a good speaker make it 1 minute – just make sure it is a good minute. Again, there is nothing wrong with hiring a professional writer to do this for you so you can spend more time practicing then you do writing it. Try not to memorize it to the point where it seems like you are reading it from an invisible piece of paper, but be comfortable enough with it that it comes out naturally.
