The Great Dane, National dog of Germany is a breed of domestic dog known for its giant size and gentle personality and is often referred to as the "Gentle Giant and the "Apollo of all breed". Great Danes are considered the tallest dog breed. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the male Great Dane is 30 to 34 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 120 to 200 pounds. The female ranges from 28 to 32 inches to the withers and 100 to 130 pounds. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1887.

The Great Dane makes a good pet for those looking for a large dog. Great Danes are brilliant dogs - they are loving companions, great for loads of outdoor activity. The Great Dane does not bark much and only becomes aggressive when the circumstances require it. They love everyone and needs to be around people. Dignified, kind, and affectionate, it is playful and patient with children and other household pets. The average life span of Great Danes is ten years but can live for 12- 13 years as long as they are kept in good shape. Diet and proper exercise are very important to your Great Dane's health.

Raising a Great Dane requires great responsibility and dedication for they are sensitive, malleable, and very dependent to human guidance and presence. But with your little attention and care Great Dane can makes an excellent apartment dog. Loyal and brave, they will surely win your heart and become additional members of your family.
