There have been many versions of the explanation of carpal tunnel syndrome, all of which can be summed up as a condition affecting the nerves of the hand and wrist. A sudden numbness on the hand and wrist followed by tingling sensations similar to a cramp are often experienced by people who spends a lot of time in front of the computer.
According to the Mayo Clinic, "Bound by bones and ligaments, the carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway - about as big around as your thumb - on the palm side of your wrist. It protects a main nerve (the Median Nerve) to your hand and nine tendons that bend your fingers."
Various theories on the actual cause of this debilitating condition range from trauma, genetics, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis to repetitive motion at work. So although there is no exact agreed upon cause, what you should do first if you think you may have it is know what it is and what are the symptoms.
1. Doing specialized CTS-specific workouts will relieve the pain and often eventually cure the condition. Make an effort to perform these exercises for a couple of weeks before you decide they are not working. You didn't develop CTS overnight, so don't expect it to resolve overnight. Just by doing five to fifteen minutes of these exercises a few times a day you will be will on your way to relieving your symptoms.
2. Invest in a splint. Wearing a splint can prevent you from bending your wrist in ways that aggravate CTS symptoms. In one study of 331 people with CTS, 66 percent got relief with a combination of splinting and taking anti-inflammatory drugs.
3. Creating Muscle Balance: Studies have shown that most people, even those with moderate to severe carpal tunnel, can greatly reduce or completely relieve their symptoms by performing exercises that create balance within their hand, wrist and forearm. Clinical research has proven that the overuse of the flexor muscles that close the hand, and under use of the extensor muscles, which open the hand, cause the hand to collapse in on itself, squeezing the carpal tunnel, restricting space and initiating the cycle of pain, numbing and weakness.
4. The first treatment should be exercises that help promote a healthy balance within your upper extremity. Most people can completely relieve or greatly reduce their symptoms by focusing on the weak, underused muscles on the backside of the hand and forearm, called the extensor muscles. Studies show that while exercising the weak extensor muscle group, and stretching the tight, over used flexor group (located on the palm side of your hands and forearm) you can easily and rather quickly, end your carpal tunnel dilemma for good.
