How to Get a Good Night Sleep

If we get a good night sleep it can make a huge difference. It sets us up for the day ahead; we will be in a better mood and will get the most out of life if our bodies are recharged and our minds alert.

However one in five of us apparently suffer from a lack of sleep which may be down to stress, personal circumstances or for medical reasons. Often it can be a simple reason that can be rectified by having a regular sleep routine or a change in lifestyle.

Follow these tips to get a better night sleep.

We all have hectic lifestyles however it is best to plan your days as much as possible so you can go to your bed at the same time every night. This will help your body synchronise awake and sleep patterns so when you do sleep, you sleep well.

Don't drink caffeinated drinks within a few hours of going to bed, they will stimulate rather than relax your mind, try an herbal tea or milky drink as an alternative.

It is best not to have a nap more than twice a week since it reduces the bodies need for nocturnal sleep.

Avoid using the bedroom for non sleep activities such as watching TV, playing games, studying and snacking as you will associate your bed with wakefulness and not sleep! You should only be in your bedroom when you are going to bed. Sex is OK though as it is said to help relax the body and promotes a good night sleep.

Avoid any activities that require physical exercise or high levels of concentration as it will fire up the body and you will find it hard to relax. Ensure the bedroom is an inviting place to rest in. Having it dark, quiet and cold will aid your sleep. You should make sure your bed is spacious and your mattress is comfortable and supportive.

Finally try and wind down and relax before bed, don't go straight to bed after watching TV, some people read, others listen to music, write lists and some will meditate.

Hopefully these tips will ensure you improve the amount and quality of your sleep and set you up for the day ahead.
