Jogging exercise is an excellent aerobic activity that helps burn a lot of calories in a limited span of time.  The main objective of jogging as an exercise is to boost fitness at low stress levels, although like running, it is categorized as a high impact exercise.

Jogging burns a certain amount of calories depending on its duration, intensity, and extent of workout. The amount of calories burned will also depend on the weight of the jogger and the speed of his jogging.  The higher the speed and the heavier the jogger is, the higher the amount of calories will be burned.  It is therefore good for people who want to lose unnecessary pounds or to maintain the current weight they have.

Jogging improves the cardiovascular health thus reducing the risks of stroke or heart attack which is very common among people with sedentary lifestyles. This is achieved by strengthening and enlarging the heart muscle to improve its blood pumping efficiency and by reducing the resting heart rate. Jogging also provides toning to the muscles throughout the body for good body conditioning.

Just like in any exercise, there are guidelines to follow in jogging as follows:

  • Start with a warm-up session.  Do not just go jogging as the muscles are still cold and therefore are more prone to injuries. Tear is likely to occur when cold muscles are pulled.

  • Be comfortable with the right shoes for your jogging.  Get a real pair of jogging shoes, not just any kind of shoes that fit well and with the right amount of cushion and ample toe space.  Add a good pair of Lycra socks that will allow wicking of the perspiration.

  • Keep your body straight while jogging. Do not stoop or bend forward as this will strain your back muscles and will make your exert more effort as you move forward. Keep your shoulders relaxed and your arms swinging freely.

  • Learn how to properly lift your knees and the right way of foot landing. Jogging the proper way will help you avoid the risk of injuries.

Joggers must also learn how to do it safely by not overdoing it.  While you may find enjoyment in jogging as you feel your strength level going up, you must not exceed your physical limits as this may lead to injuries that can cut short your jogging days.

A jogger must also take some safety precautions while jogging. He must jog against the flow of traffic in order for him to see the movements of vehicles in his path.  Jogging in the dark or in secluded areas must also be avoided because it could be an invitation for an attack from muggers. It is recommended therefore that joggers must have a companion, if possible, and he must be jogging in areas that are populated and one that he is very familiar with.  Carrying a cell phone while jogging is a good idea for it will be easy to call for help when needed.

Jogging is a rewarding exercise but all precautions must be taken by the jogger to make it a truly enjoyable one.
