Despite the dire state of global economics, with companies going under, increasing unemployment levels, collapsed banks and home repossessions, one company is continuing the thrive. Nokia, who are just about to launch what is probably the world's most advanced Smartphone and mobile computing device, the Nokia N97, is thriving.

It is certainly true that the worldwide demand for mobile gadgets has declined, and that it may decline even more over the coming months. However, in order to maintain and grow its market position within this economic climate the company has recognised that it must adapt to circumstances. Of course Nokia is no stranger to evolutionary adaptation. It started out as a paper pulp manufacturer before adding rubber goods to its portfolio. Next there came electrical cables and electronics became an activity some time later. For some time the company was a major player in the mainframe computer business and when computers got smaller they added microcomputers to their range. This was followed by mobile phones and base stations for phone networks.

The company is now planning a major change in the way it does business. In fact the business itself is changing markedly. As the mobile phone has evolved from being a device for voice communications to being an entertainment centre and mobile computing solution, the whole nature of the market has changed, as have the major players. It is no longer possible to draw a clear dividing line between the mobile phone and the applications that it sustains. Many market sectors that were once disparate have now blurred the boundaries between hardware, software applications, the internet and communications.

One result is that Nokia has had to trim some of its operations and this has included a number of cost cutting measures. However the company is now optimistic about the future. nokia phones future is typified by the N97 which ticks all the boxes in their new business model. The philosophy behind the N97 is integration of applications and hardware, and this is the direction in which Nokia perceive they are heading.
