Jane was recently dumped by her boyfriend. All cried out, she has grown tired of eating brownies and singing sad songs. Finally, she is ready to come out from under the sheets. You decide it's time to step in to help mend her broken heart. Cases like this happens everyday. Either you know someone like Jane, or have been her before. You know - the rejected girl who is so broken hearted she only talks about how sad she feels.
You want to help your friend, and may even ask her what she wants. However, she is probably too dejected to really want anything. First, keep in mind, a good friendship is more precious than any gift. What can you do? Here are five ways to help your broken-hearted girl friend:
1. Buy her a journal
Admitting that the relationship wasn't perfect is a great starting point for moving on. Writing out her thoughts and feelings will help her to recognize them. Even ranting can be cleansing. A journal is the perfect place to vent. She can write letters cursing out the man who broke her heart, and not send them. It's not a substitute for a shrink but it sure is cheaper!
2. A gym membership
Almost certainly your friend has been drowning her sorrows in ice cream and chocolate. It really helps! Before it gets out of hand, it's best to get her to the gym. If she doesn't have a membership, she should join one immediately. Or encourage her to participate in group fitness programs, such as a yoga class or boot camp. Exercise will make her feel much better by releasing mood enhancing endorphins - feel-good chemicals - in the body (a natural high!).
3. Keep her busy
Although she will need time to sort out her feelings, Staying alone for long periods of time does not help. Don't let her sit home and dwell on it. She needs to surround herself with positive people. Try to get her involved. Encourage her to do volunteer work. Take her to the movie he refused to see with her! Invite her to parties. Try to get her to enjoy life again.
4. A Get-Away
Take her away. Yes, you can go with her! Pack your bags and take yourself and your friend on the trip of a lifetime. This will be a great distraction. She can benefit from a change of scenery. If you can't afford an expensive get-away, take her to a weekend Spa retreat. It's a great way to relax and release pent up tension.
5. Introduce her to a nice guy
Yes, it is a cliché, but the best way to get over a man is with a man. Harmless flirting can boost up her self-esteem, and can help her get passed her feelings of rejection. Keep in mind, most rebound relationships do not work. However, they can be a great distraction.
Lastly, time heals all wounds. Help your girl friend to look toward the future. Remind her that the best is ahead of her. She will have plenty of other chances to find that special person.
