Message and forum boards have popped out all over the internet. It is almost impossible to find popular sites these days without them. People seem to have noticed the importance of providing a space for their readers. Message and forum boards leave the impression that what they have to say matters and that they are given a chance to their concerns out.
There are a number of message boards to choose from that would fit different needs for different kinds of people:

Message board is a helpful tool for sites wanting to drive traffic. Users can register to join the discussions and share their opinions on a certain topic. This form of user generated content can grow rapidly but needs a lot of maintenance. Enough number of people is also needed so that the page does not grow stale and is kept active. Contents have to be regulated, too. What one has to thoroughly consider, though, is that message boards can take up a lot of space if the size of avatar images and signature files are not reasonable limit.

For all websites making use of forums, owners have to remember that it takes time to build a community. Forums do not grow steady overnight and must be maintained to be kept active. Patience is truly a virtue with forums because as your community grows, your expertise on a particular topic or field will be established. It will also give your readers a reason to keep coming back to your site so they can continually participate in the discussions they have joined in. again, this will drive more people to your site and will drive a steady traffic.

Given that your forum and message boards are now flooded with more people coming by the minute, the need of moderators come into the picture, too. They are necessary to keep things moving and to keep spammers away. They basically regulate the content and its amount and normally, one or two people will do.

Although message boards and/or forums seem to be a very good idea to add in your sites, do make sure though that they are kept active, are carefully planned, and made interesting. Its existence must be made for a purpose and not just for the show. Having an inactive forum with no recent activity is as good as having no forums at all.
