How Can I Make My Small Business Look Big?

You may have the skill set, services and products that earn you a right to be recognized in the industry you're in, but the truth remains that competition is fierce out there. You're swimming with the sharks and they're out to bite. Those other companies have more money, more personnel, recognition and therefore, more pull. Good thing the only thing standing between you and more business coming in are the proper attitude, proper technology and proper presentation. Below are some ways you can make your small business/home office take on a bigger feel. While some suggestions might require spending, the others need only your commitment to professionalism.

1. Phone system. "When it comes to telephones, associated equipment, and services, it's time to splurge," says Debra Koontz Traverso, author of Outsmarting Goliath: How to Achieve Equal Footing with Companies That are Bigger, Richer, Older and Better Known. "Buy or lease the best system or service you can justify." You don't need to drop several thousand dollars for this as there are more affordable options out there, you just need to look. The main thing is that you need to get a separate phone line for your home and for your business. When people call you on the telephone, the impression you want to give is that they are calling an actual company even if you are the only employee so far. A residential line is cheaper but getting a business line will get you in the business listings in the phone book.

2. Presentation. Whether it's your website or your business cards, you should aim for a polished, sleek look that doesn't scream "home-made." Your packaging is what makes a great first impression next to your service, so make it a memorable one as well. It's tempting to knock off a web or card design from a template you can find on the Internet, but there's nothing like having a personalized look and feel that is unique to your company.

3. Think and speak "We." Always use "we" when referring to yourself in discussions with your clients or prospects, says Tanya F. Hilleary, president of Virginia-based Riverbyte Communications. And never make on-the-spot decisions but instead say that you will need to consult with your executive committee on the matter.

4. Accept credit cards. People won't expect that from a sole proprietor and if you're doing business online anyway, then you'd be a dead duck to not accept card transactions.

5. Exceed expectations. The only thing better than a company who can answer a client's questions is one that can answer them before they are even asked. Cover all bases and offer the necessary information and guarantees before it is even brought up. This way your company will sound prepared, competent and experienced.
