With the range of games and gaming consoles on offer, this article can literally just be a list of the various brands and products currently on offer in the market. However I'll list and introduce you to the most popular gaming consoles in the world.
The three major players in the gaming console market today are Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. Each company offers a range of products, including:
Sony
The PlayStation Range - Sony is one of the pioneers in the gaming console market and the term "PlayStation" has become a byword for gaming consoles. The range has evolved from the PlayStation I (PS1), which was launched in December 1994, to PlayStation III (PS3), which was released in November 2006. Sony also has a hand held gaming device in its stables (PlayStation Portable or PSP).
Nintendo
The Nintendo Company is the grand daddy of gaming devices in the world. It was set up in September 1889 as a company producing hanafuda cards (Japanese playing cards). It slowly developed into a video game company and is one of the most valuable listed companies in Japan and also in the world. It is virtually impossible to list all of the gaming consoles and upgrades Nintendo has produced, so let us just have a look at their latest offerings, the DS and the Wii.
The DS is a hand held game console and can be seen as a development of Nintendo's popular Game Boy series. Its USP are its clam shell design and dual screen.
The Wii today is the largest selling home video game console in the world, pipping its closest competitors, Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox. It is the direct successor to the GameCube and is able to play all official GameCube games.
Microsoft
The newest entrant in the video game console market has the brand name and the expertise of the software behemoth Microsoft with it. The company released the Xbox, its first foray in the gaming console market, in 2001 and even though it was not able to dethrone the market leader Nintendo, a new competitor was in the folds. With the launch of the Xbox 360 in 2005, Microsoft has taken home video gaming to a new level. Playing on its strengths in the software market and its hold over the internet, the company offers a host of unique features, such as competing online and downloading content, such as arcade games, game demos, trailers, TV shows and movies. These make the Xbox 360 an exciting proposition.
