If you love to eat at restaurants, you may think that this activity is not good for a healthy diet. In most cases, you are probably right. However, you can still enjoy eating at restaurants and maintain a healthy diet. Eating healthy in restaurants is all about making good food choices.

When you pick up the menu, skip right over the alcohol section. Although you may be tempted to drink, these usually have many empty calories, which is not good for your body. Also skip over the appetizers, unless they offer salads as a choice. The appetizers at restaurants are usually foods extremely high in fat or calories. Instead, focus on what your main course will be. Most people like to dine with others. If the group orders an appetizer for everyone to share, then only take an extremely small portion or don't eat any at all.

When selecting your main course, consider the ingredients of the dish. Anything with cream sauces or high-fat meats should be avoided, and pass on potatoes or onion rings. Instead choose side dishes like vegetables or ask for just the main course when possible.

Portion control is one of the most important factors in eating healthy in restaurants and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in general. When possible, order off of the lunch menu as the portion is generally smaller. Ask for a to go container when you order and put half of your dish in the container as soon as it arrives. Something else you can do is to offer to share a meal with your companion. By splitting your portion in half before you start eating, you will not be tempted to eat more than you should.

One of the biggest challenges with eating healthy in restaurants is resisting the dessert menu. Again, if the group orders dessert, have either an extremely small portion or none at all. Your main course should have been enough to fill you up.

Eating healthy in restaurants does not mean not enjoying the food. Quite the contrary! Smart decisions and good food choices will leave you feeling good about yourself and your body feeling nourished.

Though it has nothing to do (directly) with weight loss, a good support network sure makes dealing with these issues easier to manage. Chances are, you'll find strength and healing when and where you least expect it!
