I think the law shall forbid to people give out expired food. We need to treat homeless people with dignity. In general, the purpose of the legal system is to provide equity among citizens; health is one area that needed to be governed by law. The expiry date is a human made system to measure what is healthy and safe. Although expiry date was made somewhat arbitrary for human world, it is practical and helpful. Everything in human world needs a measuring system, so human can make better decisions. Improving the welfare system will reduce the problems of poverty; trying to deal with the issue with expiry food regulation will incur possible health hazards. Similar cases, for example, companies hire people by resumes and interviews application process. Although education do not always tell how well one is equipped for the job, employers—with the time constraint—cannot thoroughly understand his or her applicants' backgrounds. Resumes and education are the only world standard measurement that human can rely on. Human has not had a better measurement yet. If homeless people are allowed to search through the trash can, citizens' privacy might be violated, and it is hard to track down the person who shall be liable for the consequences. Liability wise, we need to consider the consequences and responsibilities that would have incurred if we allow homeless people to get expired food from supermarket. Another misconception is that la w has to be ethical. Law is to protect each citizen rights and duties; therefore, law has to include all kind of problems in society. If some problems are not addressed by law, then some people's right are not being protected. Law is about inclusive and fairness.
