Although building muscle should be fairly straight forward as in you lift weights - get stronger - muscles get bigger - it actually becomes a little more complex than that. You see the thing to building muscle is that you first of all have to train properly, secondly you have to eat properly and third of all you have to rest.
The training part of it is quite simple really in that you have to increase your weights to increase growth - but that is not to say you throw form out of the window by not doing the exercise properly . The best way in my experience to do this is to first of all log all of your weights, reps and sets every time you go to the gym (it is also good practice to record your rest time between reps too so that you know that the reason you are lifting heavier weights is because you have got stronger and not rested longer). Then when you find that you are comfortably doing the routine you increase the weight then and place your muscles under more stress forcing them to grow.
Next up is food, to grow muscle you need to eat the right foods. In essence you need all of the following protein, fat and carbs, but in the right amounts. Protein for instance is your building block for the muscles and can be found in many foods and widely available as a supplement as well.
Next up is fat. Now of course you do not want to be eating a diet high in saturated fat, however you do need some of the good fats found in things like avacodos, olive oil and nuts. Be careful with the amount you consume here, as these can be calorific as well - which doe not help if you are trying to get ripped.
The last food group you need is carbs. Carbs get a bad press, pretty much because the wrong types of carbs are just stored in the body as fat. However if you have carbs straight after exercising then the body will take them and burn them up straight away and use them as energy.
The last and probably most overlooked part of the whole muscle building set up is rest. A lot of people spend way too much time in the gym and as a result end out over training. Now the problem with over training is that you go to do your workout and have no energy and because you have no energy then your weights do not increase, and because your weights do not increase then you do not get stronger and your muscles do not grow. Seems obvious I know but it is hugely overlooked and the reason why a lot of people simply do not get the muscle growth they are looking for.
So in a nutshell if you are looking to build muscle then you need to take those three critical steps to get good growth, they are increase the weights you are using - eat properly - rest. Do this and you should start to see results in a short space of time
