Why is it that the term "love handles" has no lovely connotation to it whatsoever? I have never understood why such a nice term is so unsightly!

For as long as I have been a personal trainer I have had countless numbers of people contact me with hopes that I can turn their love handles into a sleek, sexy mid-region. Most of these people have come to me as a last ditch effort to rid themselves of love handles after years of not getting optimal results.

Most people think there is a simple, easy way to rid yourself of love handles...basically, do more cardio and high repetitions of oblique exercises (including side-bending and rotational movements) and eat less.

This protocol may seem like a logical program to follow, but unfortunately it yields little or (in most cases) no results. Lets investigate why this expert approved approach is so startlingly ineffective.

The protocol listed above is basically just a typical weight loss regimen. Eating less and doing more cardio will lead to weight loss, but will not necessarily lead to fat loss. You see, most weight loss protocols cause you to lose a fair amount of lean muscle and water, and just a small amount of actual body fat.

Isolating the sides of your waist with oblique exercises is not an effective way to lose the fat from your sides--if only it were that easy, right? The worst part about the myth that isolating your obliques with back-breaking crunches will help you lose fat is that it will actually bulk up your muslce creating a larger mid-section.

The best way to lost stubborn body fat is to create a protocol to encourage the building and maintaining of lean muscle while stimulating the metabolism. I know that love handle fat is the MOST stubborn fat of all, but throughout many years of trial and error research, I have created a fool proof plan to attack love handles once and for all!

1) Sprint training- The best cardio activity for your body is sprinting; it not only burns body fat but also increases your metabolism which in turn works those pesky love handles away!

2) Make sure you are performing a properly designed resistance training program. This is of the utmost importance. Although high rep resistance training is typically advocated for fat loss, I believe integrating low reps is critical for permanent fat loss results.

When you are using only high reps you can actually lose LEAN muscle during the fat loss process; when this happens there is a negative effect on your metabolism slowing down your fat loss.

A resistance training program is crucial to fat loss, but it must be designed very shrewdly. A specific balance between higher rep exercises and lower rep exercises must be utilized if optimal results are to be seen.

3) Varying calories: Creating a caloric deficit, or cutting calories, is critical when your goal is to burn body fat. Doing this will slow your metabolism down over time, but unfortunately that is a unavoidable under such circumstances.

To prevent this negative effect, you must not stay in a caloric deficit for longer than 5 consecutive days. So I suggest that you decrease your calories for 3-5 days and then eat up for one or two days to replenish your glycogen stores and give your metabolic rate a much needed boost.

The most critical thing to remember when you want to lose stubborn body fat is keep your metabolism in check. You'll notice that each aspect of this program has a metabolism-boosting effect to ensure adequate fat-burning.

So forget side bends, and forget long cardio workouts! You have just learned the key to getting rid of your love handles forever! Now get to work!
