House breaking a Shih Tzu puppy is much easier than trying to train an older dog. An older dog can be trained but it is more difficult. Make sure your puppy is old enough to control herself. This age varies but is about 12 weeks maybe a little sooner or a little later.
The real trick to house training is noticing the pattern of elimination which is almost always right after eating or drinking. You must get the puppy where you want the elimination to happen at the right time. Then the puppy can learn what's expected.
Here are the basic steps for potty training your Shih Tzu.
1. Take him wherever the right place is at the following times:
- right after each meal (usually three times a day for puppies);
- after naps;
- when you take him from his crate;
- right before bed time;
- at any time when he looks like he's ready!
2.
Feed and water only when you're ready to take the pup out. But establish a routine, otherwise it's not fair to the pup. If you control water times, make sure you offer enough water especially during hot weather.
3. Praise success. But be patient and just quietly clean up messes. Don't forget that there will be accidents.
4. For the first few days of training be close to your dog at all times. That way you get that consistent pattern going so your dog can learn quickly. You will be amazed how quickly many dogs will learn what to do.
5. Patience is the key to rapid progress. Remember this puppy is just beginning to learn and be patient at all times. These lessons help as you progress to more training.
In just a short time your puppy will know how to communicate with you when he or she needs to go out. Keep patiently working with your pup and you will soon have success at house training a Shi Tzu.
