Are women in the new millennium being influenced by magazines and television to dress in a more provocative and sexual manner?

Last week in the UK, the National Union of journalists with the backing of Equity called a conference to investigate the image of women in the media. This is no doubt reinforced by mega-celebrities like Madonna who is renowned for her sexual image and prowess. Does dressing in this manner make women more empowered? Or is it yet another example of women feeling like they have no option but to be a sexual object to get on in life? Do men respect women who dress down more? How does this effect women and their ability to be in any profession and be treated equally to their male counterparts? The UK conference mainly focused on the low number of women who are on the UK's National Executive of the Journalists union. Even though higher numbers of women than ever before are taking journalism as a career, still only four women are on the national exective board. This is out of a number of 34 possible positions.

In the 1950's a woman's role was to be a good housewife, be clean, look after their family and dress in a suitable manner of a wife. Every detail was mapped around the husband's needs. In the year 2009, women don't have to get married. Women can have their children and hold down a career. Women quite often can be the main wage earner. Women have many options these days. Do people look down on women who choose to ignore the new-way and wish to be conservative? It is possible that it is harder to be an at-home Mother these days than ever before. People think that this is seen as the easier option. Being an at-home Mother is probably the most thankless task as they don't bring home a wage each week and don't get any time off for good behaviour. However, working full time and rearing children is extremely hardwork as most people rush in from work, whilst putting on the washing machine, whilst making dinner, and trying to chat at length with their little ones. The guilt associated with leaving them perhaps with childminders can be overbearing, so maybe they feel resentful for being the wage-earner as well as the main carer. Is having it all worth it?

Every day, whilst shopping at any of the shopping centres or supermarkets, the media and rather rashly dressed women are being pushed into our lives. Standing at a checkout lane, most people are surrounded by scantily dressed women, and in some cases, bearly covered women. How further are their careers, especially actresses, are harmed by these pictures? How much affect does this have on our young females who see these celebrities and want to dress the same or earn the same sort of money? The question is whether or not women now feel empowdered by these images? Or do we think that these images that women should have to live up to are too intimidating? Body image is key these days, with obesity figures rising rapidly. Yet, people still think that to be thin is to be perfect. Perhaps it is a prison that is being created for us by these expectations and woman, in the future, may be the ones to pay the heavy price. On closing, memberships for female singles using online dating sites are on the rise. This is directly attributed to the fact that dating and chat room sites provide women with a barrier from real life society and associated pressures, with the online world offering women a reprieve from an increasingly materialistic and competitive world.
