If it's detected early, breast cancer can often be treated effectively. There are surgeries that preserve the breast, and after that, a radiation therapy usually is enforced. Radiation is a localized therapy that can sometimes be accompanied by systemic chemotherapy and/or hormonal therapy. The five-year survival rate after treatment for early-stage breast cancer is an amazing and hopeful 96%!!
Breast cancer in its early stages usually does not cause any pain, which can make it easy to overlook. Actually, when breast cancer is first developing there are often no symptoms at all. But as the cancer grows, it can cause changes that women should watch for.
Detecting Changes: Signs and Symptoms
• A new or persistent lump or thickening in or near the breast, or in the underarm area
• A change in the size or shape of the breast
• A spontaneous discharge from the nipple
• A change in the color or feel of the breast, areola or nipple, such as dimpling, puckering or scaliness
If you do regular self-breast exams, you should be able to detect any of these things. If you think something is abnormal, see your doctor. There's nothing wrong with being cautious. Most abnormalities aren't cancer, but more likely cysts, or a gathering of fatty tissue. These can be taken care of quickly and painlessly. Your doctor, you, and your family will be happy you're being safe, rather than ignoring something more serious later.
