That's right you may not be using the right fragrance to compliment your mojo. Many men today have one or two bottles of old faithful cologne or aftershave. Men wear it everywhere: out, to work, and even around the house. Basically it is their signature scent. The problem lies in that there are few fragrances that work for all occasions. The fragrance you wear to the club generally is stronger than the fragrance you wear at work or around the house (or at least it should be). This article is designed to help men understand the four different types of men's fragrance and determine what type is right to wear in what circumstances.
Selecting the proper fragrance for the right occasion can make or break your impression. A strong overpowering fragrance will overwhelm and leave a negative impression. As soft light fragrance depending on the atmosphere may not even be appreciated as the scent wasn't strong enough to be picked up by the nose.
Each fragrance has primary notes. The Primary notes are what the fragrance is principally composed of. There are four basic classes of notes Oriental, Floral, Fresh, and Woody notes. Each has unique scent, duration and strength of scent that will contribute to the overall fragrance.
Oriental Fragrances
Oriental notes are generally considered to be the heaviest of notes, offering a stronger longer lasting fragrance. These scents are usually composed of heavy blends of musk, vanilla and sandalwood.
Recommended Application: evening, romance
Examples of Oriental Fragrances: Obsession by Calvin Klein, Armani Black Code by Giorgio Armani, Egoiste by Chanel
Floral Fragrances
While in the past, floral scent has been considered as very masculine. Today, floral fragrances are slightly less popular as a men's fragrance. Floral scents vary in that they are composed of a primary flower or a bouquet of different flowers.
Recommended Application: day, casual, casual evening
Examples of Floral Fragrances: Bvlgari BLV by Bvlgari, Insensé by Givenchy, Burberry Touch by Burberry
Fresh Fragrances
Fresh notes are what I would classify as the clean scents. They are light and offer a fresh, airy fragrance. These scents are composed of light outdoor scents, and citrus. Examples of these notes include: fresh cut grass, lemon, orange, grapefruit, mandarin, and bergamot.
Recommended Application: Causal, Office, Casual Evening
Examples of Fresh Fragrances: Polo Blue by Ralph Lauren, Aqua Di Gio by Giorgio Armani, Apparition by Emanuel Ungaro, Drakkar Noir by Guy La Roche
Woody Fragrances
Woody notes offer a moderate to strong scent. Woody fragrances are often time considered a little exotic. Woody notes are composed of scents from Sandalwood, Vetiver, Oakmoss, Patchouli Bergamot, burnt wood, and tobacco.
Recommended Application: Casual, Romantic, Evening
Examples of Woody Fragrances: BY by Dolce & Gabbana, Truth by Calvin Klein, Fahrenheit by Christian Dior
To summarize, remember that there are very few fragrances that can be worn for all occasions. The recommendations made are simple popular samples of each type of fragrance category, by no means are they hard fast rules. The recommendations are to be used a guide to help each man understand the basics of how to wear the proper fragrance and work his way to the "right side" of the ladies.
