Good Leaders are Good Communicators

In Fast Company writer Mark Goulston explores the obvious
yet often overlooked aspect of communication in leadership.
Goulston's article, entitled "Create Connections", points
out that leaders often focus on their goals and forget to
communicate effectively with the individuals who do the work
that is essential for achieving those goals.

"John Baldoni specializes in connections. As a leadership
and communications consultant, Baldoni works with senior
managers to help them connect with their people in ways that
are simple, honest, and genuine. Sounds easy, right? Not
exactly. Baldoni believes that many executives focus so much
on goals and objectives that they lose a sense of
themselves--and the ability to convey that identity to
employees. "One of the key attributes of leadership is
authenticity," says Baldoni. "People want to follow leaders
who seem genuine.""

We all know the importance of good communication, but
leaders may become consumed by "corporate speak" and forget
that the most effective way to reach their associates is
through conversation. To gain their trust, loyalty and
commitment to the goals, good leaders will also be good
communicators.
