Tile Grout Cleaning and Sealing

If you have a home with tile, you understand the effect that dirty tile can have on the overall appearance of any room. Doing your best to maintain clean tile and grout can make a world of difference in the appearance of your floor, shower, or anywhere else you may have tile. One of the most effective ways to clean tile is simply with warm water and a clean cloth. Gently wipe away any light soil with warm water. As you may come across stains on your tile that water alone cannot clean, be prepared to use a specialized cleaner, and maybe a bit of elbow grease. Make an attempt to clean it with warm water before moving on to chemicals that may damage the glaze on your tile. If your tile lacks glaze, you may find it easier to clean if you apply a sealant.

Many people make use of vinegar to clean their floor tile. However, due to the surface damage and possible color change that it can cause, vinegar is not recommended. There is no doubt that vinegar will do the job, however there are some serious drawbacks to its use for cleaning tile. You can purchase particular items to clean your tile and grout, but you must follow the direction precisely and only use them as directed for your tile. Don't apply more than the instructions tell you to, and be certain it is not dangerous to apply to the tile surfaces before you begin. Some tiles consist of different materials so always be careful when cleaning your tile.


If you must scour an exceptionally dirty or stubborn area of tile, use a non-abrasive cleaner. This is a safer way to clean your tile and should prevent any damage. It is best to use a soft brush when cleaning grout. Many people prefer the use of a soft-bristle toothbrush when cleaning grout. This will assist you to reach between the tiny spaces of the tile. Following the cleaning of your tile and grout, don't forget to rinse it completely to wash away the entire residue that remains. Once the rinse is complete, use a soft, dry cloth to dry the area and buff it out. After you have dried it, allow it to set a while to ensure that the tile and grout are completely and entirely dry. You may find areas that require more sealant. To complete the job, the sealing between each tile is an essential step. Carefully go over it with the sealant, and be sure to smooth any areas where excess was applied. Finally give your sealant plenty of time to dry before continuing to use the tiled area. After you have finished this, your tile will look like it was installed yesterday!
